Why are colleges so expensive?

“The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet” -Aristotle

In the 21st century where education is considered one of the most powerful weapons for changing the world, only 8.15% of the Indian population (98.615 million) are graduates according to the 2011 census while 32.6% of the population is not educated to the primary school level.

Various factors make colleges expensive, like things from growing demand, rising financial aid, etc. As of 2016, about 121 million households in India belonged to the middle-income bracket earning an annual income of between 7,700 and 15,400 U.S dollars, the rising demand increased the cost of colleges, which has made education extremely cumbersome for the financial weak about 70% of rural Indians are not able to complete 10th standard education. Pursuing a college degree in general courses means an average expenditure of Rs 5,240 per student in rural areas, and more than three times the rural average spends Rs 16,308 in urban areas. For those who choose to pursue medical degrees, the cost soars to over Rs 72,000 a year.

A few of the factors that make college expensive are-

1. Huge amount of demand

Education is considered an important need in the current society. Consequently, leads to huge demand, which leads the colleges to limit the number of students accordingly and increase the number of fees. An average amount of Rs 63,280 per year plus accommodation and other charges are required to enroll a child in engineering in India, while the average per capita income is about Rs 10,500 per month.

2. Tremendous competition

Excessive competition is one of the reasons which leads to huge increases in the fees, the number of people trying to acquire the same seat has increased, for example, Every year out of approximately 12 lakh students applying in JEE Mains.

somewhere around 2.00.000 students qualify(pass) JEE Mains including all categories.

These people then give JEE Advanced consequently out of them, only 30000 - 40000 get qualified (getting a rank in the result) in JEE Advanced.

Only 10,000 seats are available in IITs. So best of these 30,000 - 40,000 get shortlisted.

3. Overbuilding of campus amenities-

One of the factors as to why colleges are expensive is the overbuilding of campus amenities which indirectly pressurizes the fees causing it to increase, some extra amenities which provide less utility increases the fees required to pay.

4. Transportation- According to care rating transportation constitutes up to 12% of the college fees. This consists of not only the back to and from campus it also includes the private transport and the cost endures by the students which increase the expenditure for colleges.

5. Other necessary expenditure-

Other factors such as cost of living contribute a huge amount regarding why college is expensive, many colleges have hostels within the campus for students who have to pay extra amount apart from their college tuition fees for hostels and in scenarios where the colleges do not have hostel accommodations students are required to find other accommodations outside of hostel separately which generally are more expensive.

ONLINE COLLEGES

Online colleges are programs that allow students to get degrees primarily or entirely through the internet. Online colleges have a similar course layout to offline colleges, while the tuition costs of online colleges are similar to offline colleges the overall costs are significantly lower since the students attend the classes via the internet so consequently the transportation fees and hostel fees are not required to be endured by the students, similarly online colleges provide students a faster path for graduation since with the online curriculum the students can study at their own pace moreover traditional offline colleges provide with holidays, conversely, in online college the courses can be completed over holidays. Various colleges provide free online classes which like, the University of people, Columbia University, Stanford University, University of Cambridge.

In society today, the value of education is being recognized and various methods of education are being promoted and different educational courses are being created to educate the masses moreover despite the huge amount of demand which is causing the fees to skyrocket, the existence of scholarships and grants have provided a huge helping hand to the students moreover with substantial scholarships, prevention of overbuilding amenities and merit-based applications can help the society to overcome the huge wall of expensive education. --- Gaurav
